“I knew I had to do something.”

Zack Arias is an editorial and commercial photographer based in Atlanta, GA. His specialty is niched in press and publicity photography for the music and television industries. His clients include HGTV, Land Rover, Business Week, The Coca-Cola Company, TIME, The Smithsonian, VICE, and Sony Music.

Zack’s first run at being a freelance photographer left him heavily in debt and placed his family on the edge of destruction. He came to a place in his career that required him to put the cameras down and take a “day job.” After two years of selling off gear to help pay rent and fix beater cars, Zack was given a chance to come back to the photography industry as a second shooter at weddings. He took a D100, a Visitor 285 flash, an ample amount of faith, and quit his job at Kinkos in October of 2003. He was determined to do things differently this time around.

His minimalist approach to photography turned into the OneLight Workshop in 2005 that he now teaches around the world. It has become so popular that dates for the workshop regularly sell out months in advance.

Sue Bryce - No More Rockstars

Photo-Dec-03,-3-59-46-PM-WEBsquare.jpg

“We don’t cultivate this culture of rockstars anymore in the industry.”

Back in 2010 or so, I was sitting in a small bar in Las Vegas with my friend Sally Sargood and another woman whom I had just met through Sally. Shortly after introducing me to her, Sally pulled me to the side a bit and whispered that the woman we were sitting with was on the verge of exploding in the industry and that she was going to be the biggest thing out there. That woman was Sue Bryce. I got to sit a bit with Sue at her conference, The Portrait Masters, in Phoenix this past fall, and I’m here to tell you, she’s all that and a bag of chips. Please pardon my nerves, and enjoy the conversation…

22:34 Finding Dani

“There is no easy action in Photoshop that you can click and then suddenly make money.”

Dani Diamond has become a household name.  His breathtaking portraits and signature style have taken over all forms of social media, from Facebook to Fstoppers.

Dani grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and now lives in Connecticut with his wife, Etty, and works in New York City. He began his journey into photography merely as a hobby after graduating with a degree in business administration.

Dani started shooting landscapes and portraiture and found that people responded fiercely to his portraits, due to the connection Dani was able to create with his camera. Dani grew a fast following on facebook and social media. Dani’s ability to answer, comment and respond to his followers is just one more thing that makes Dani the photographer that he is.

Dani’s gear of choice is his Nikon D800 and his favorite lens the 85 1.4g. He uses the 85 to allow him to be close to his subject but also allow for nice compression and blur. The “blur” is what got Dani interested in portraits in the first place, his curiosity pushed him to find out how he could create that, too. The rest is all in the details, and as Dani delved into the world of photography, he made a new path.

The process of creating such gripping photos comes with something every artist needs. A workstation. Dani’s workstation is like no other, equipped with surround sound to so Dani can work in harmony while retouching. He has created a facebook group for music retouching [Epic Remixes For Retouching], where other photographers and editors share their work jams and share retouching secrets.

“I’m not the kind of guy who can sit on the couch and watch tv.”

What Dani knows about photography, Dani loves to share with you. He is not one to hide his secrets to his own success. He enjoys weekly writing articles for Fstoppers and making tutorials and how-tos. He offers mentoring sessions as well helping other photographers realize their goals and take their work to a new level. Dani finds the people he works with inspire and push him to grow more, every day.

The emotion and realness of his work is felt in every photo. Each piece is retouched and edited to natural perfection, enhanced just enough to highlight the moment and reel the viewer in. This is similar to how he works in person. A photoshoot with Dani is just like a walk in the park.  Dani focuses on the relationship between subject and photographer. The technical details are there, but if there is no expression…there is no great portrait. Retouching, lighting, gear – it doesn’t matter unless the connection and moment is there to build on.

Something Dani believes is that you don’t need to be talented to be successful, but you need to be ambitious. He hopes to continue his career in fashion and portraits for the rest of his life.

Dani attributes most of his success to his wife Etty, who is his true secret to success.

“The wow factor of a printed portfolio is ten times that of an iPad.”

And this “job” has allowed me to service so many. From helping the homeless to shoe drives, and so on. Fun fact about me: I raise snakes, ball pythons to be exact, and I LOVE IT. If you fear them, look me up and I’ll help you overcome that fear. I serve on the PPA Speaker Committee and I’m one of two Iowa PPA Council members, along with serving on the Iowa PPA Board. My wife and I run the studio together along with taking care of our two dogs, 150-gallon fish tank, African Grey Parrott, two tortoises, nine bearded dragons, one frilled dragon and many, many snakes…oh, and our 17-year-old son, Michael.

By now, you can probably tell I’m not very good at this as I’m rambling…I never know what to say. I’ll leave you with this…If you have the opportunity to help someone, DO it. And, as Mother Teresa said, “If you can’t feed one hundred, feed just one.“

“I wanted this cut and dry story...”

Tanja Melone - Why I Do What I Do: Going Deeper

“I think it’s really important for any photographer to know why they are shooting.”

Tanja Melone has a why and it’s beautiful. Do you know yours?

“We’re such an image driven society.”

Tanja leapt headfirst into a dream and into the photography industry 16 years ago when she left her very corporate job as an environmental scientist by the wayside. She then proceeded to make every mistake known to new business owners (twice in most cases) before finding her groove. Rather than giving up, which would have been the easy choice, she busted her hiney learning, growing, regrouping, rebranding and redefining her idea of a successful business along the way. Today she owns a studio in downtown Denver, CO where she photographs bold, brave high school seniors, newborns of imperfect courageous moms who sometimes forget to breath, and commercial and editorial assignments that challenge her. Tanja is also a business coach with a flair for digging deep into the ‘why’ behind running a business and navigating entrepreneurship with purpose. Tanja believes that happiness is a choice, that success is defined by much more than a bank account, that life shouldn’t be sugar coated and that you should dare to be unapologetically you…always.

26:42 The Importance of Providing an Amazing Experience

“My maternity shoot is the reason why I’m doing what I do now. I felt amazing. So, I want to provide that for each one of my clients.”

In my previous career, I was a labor and delivery nurse and a childbirth educator.  I feel as though my experience in the medical field as well as being a mom to 3 children, gives me a unique insight in the handling of all babies; preemies through multiples.

My attention to detail, passion for photography, and owning fine art printing equipment is what develops my art into a superior heirloom product. “What is this family’s style of art? Do I have a headband/hat for this baby that matches their interests? Is the wrap lying just right on the baby? Are the baby’s fingers perfectly straight?” These are just some of the thoughts that race through my mind when I’m planning your custom Belly Beautiful experience.

I have gone to great lengths to invest in props, headbands, hats, maternity gowns, fabrics, backdrops etc. so that everyone who chooses Belly Beautiful for capturing their precious moments, will have full access to my studio as well as the peace of mind. Knowing that each of the thousands of babies who have been photographed by Belly Beautiful always has our undivided attention and safety in mind at all times. This is why I have assistants who I personally train to handle the safety of your baby.

People do not come to me for just pictures; they come to get the Belly Beautiful experience so that we can capture a short, perfect moment in time with beauty and emotion so that it can be cherished. I love documenting precious milestones such as pregnancy and the wee early moments in life.

“I feel like the industry is kinda honing back in on actual printing…which is a great thing.”
